IHSAA Girls Track & Field State Championship Recap

Upset filled 200 meter prelims give way to upset filled final

Evansville North sophomore De'Janay Layne ran 24.79 in the final to secure herself the victory despite coming in with the fifth-fastest season best. A few weeks ago she was the state's top performer from sectionals where she would run a 24.64 just ahead of her teammate.

This was emblematic of the 200-meter event as a whole: Three of the top-nine ranked athletes failed to advance out of the preliminary heats, while two runners-Brownsburg's Izzy Neal and Carmel's Emily Norris-who hadn't broken 25 seconds this year did advance.

In addition to getting first in the long jump and second in the 100-meter dash, Jila Vaden also finished third in the half-lap race.

Another notable finish was Elise Smith of North Central (Ind.) who came in with the 11th fastest season best and walked away with fourth place.
