Tarter improves on last year's 110m hurdles finals, also wins 300m hurdles
The prelims for the 110-meter high hurdles were, for the most part, chalk: The top five athletes (based on season bests) advanced, as well as No. 7 - 9. The biggest upset was Luke Kaufhold of South Bend St. Joseph with his season best entering the meet being tied for 11th.
Once racing for points, Tyler Tarter of Fishers had no problem dispatching his competition, running 13.85. The battle for second went to Fort Wayne Northrop's Javion Westfield (14.24), with Chesterton's Kieran Barnewall in third (14.32).
Add more hurdles at a lower height and extend the distance contested, and Tarter will still dominate. The Fishers athlete won the 300-meter hurdles in 37.25, outpacing Mt. Vernon hurdler Andres Langston and his 38.20.
The double gold added to Tarter's already impressive season in which he was undefeated in hurdles races, minus prelims. He also holds the state record in the 300-meter hurdles and is eighth in the 110-meter hurdles; nationally, Tarter is ranked second in the country for the 300m hurdles and t-17th in the high hurdles.
Westfield also doubled back, grabbing the bronze, while Kaufhold placed eighth in both races.
Tarter talks about how much winning both hurdle events means after devastating injury in the 110m hurdle finals from last year's state finals.
