Hoosier State Relays Large School Preview

High Jump

Sophomore Jordan Randall cleared 7 feet last week at Trine and is up for National Performance of the Week!

The high jump will once again be a great competition to witness this year. In the last week of qualifying Jordan Randall and Elliot Ryba would both clear 7 feet to share the state lead. Both would achieve new PRs according to our database with Jordan doing so at Trine and Elliot doing it in Anderson at the Blue and White Relays. At the finals last year Jordan would earn runner-up honors as a freshman with Elliot placing 5th. Currently Jordan is up for voting for national performance of the week so make sure to vote for him here! Chazz Corley holds the next best jump of the season with a 6'8". Also returning from last year's podium includes Ethan Widenhoefer, Jay Hmurovich, and Luke Robertson.

After earning runner-up honors last year as a freshman Bailey Sinish comes back to lead the state by three inches with a jump of 5' 9" at the Midwest High Performance Series HSR Qualifier. This jump would be a new PR according to our database for the Fort Wayne Carroll sophomore. Coming from the same area of the state at the #2 seed is Ellie Irwin from Homestead with her jump of 5' 6", she was 5th at last year's finals. Behind her are three girls at 5'4" and four girls listed at 5'3". Other returners from the podium last year include Emily Ritenour, Emerson Vlcan, and Sukh Chahal.

Long Jump

Coming in with the top seed is Jaylen Ramsey from Merrillville with a jump of 23' 1.5" from the Indian Open at Portage. Michael White from Homestead looks to be the only athlete in range to challenge as he has jumped to 22' 10" this season. The rest of the field looks to have a blanket finish order as the next 10 jumpers are within 4.25 inches of each other between 21' 7" and 21' 11.25". There looks to be several returners from last year's podium as well that include Michael Griffith, Robert Nabieu, Michael Starks, and Alex Eyasu.

The Warren Central duo of Laila Smith and Jila Vaden lead the state from their jumps from the first Warren Central HSR qualifier. Laila's jump of 19' 10.75" is better than the current HSR meet record of 19' 7.5" set in 2004 by Columbia City's Leah Eber. Her teammate is not too far behind with a jump of 19' 6.5". Other jumpers who have marks at or over 18 feet this year include Elnora Stevenson, Ella Carden, Gabriela Grande Rosas, and Emily Norris. Dede Eberle and Kylee Marshall also return from last year's podium.

Pole Vault

At the pole vault freshman Isaac Roman and Eli Griffin share the top position with both clearing a height of 15 feet this year at the first Warren Central HSR qualifier this season. Behind this pair Jake Grangier and Jaylen Walcott sit behind this duo as they have vaulted 14' 9" this year. Last year Cody Johnston would vault 17 feet for the win and a HSR meet record. From that podium Carter Pheifer looks to be the only returner for this weekend's finals.

There is also a tie for the state lead for the girls as well between three girls from Greenwood Community, Noblesville, and Brownsburg. Amy Luttrell, Delaney Teachnor, and Ashlyn Schwab all have vaulted to a height of 12' 6" at separate meets. At last year's meet Amy would finish 4th, Delaney at 5th, and Ashlyn at 10th. Noblesville will also likely look to have multiple scorers in this event as Amelia Smith currently has the #4 seed with a 11' 9" vault. Last year the Millers had three scorers at the finals. Makenna Carpenter also will return after placing 5th on the podium last season.

Shot Put

Seth Brosseau and Nylan Brown have the top marks entering the meet and are the only athletes to have thrown over 60 feet this season. Seth has a mark of 63' 8.25" from the West Lafayette Individuals meet with Nylan having a throw of 60' 6.75" at the second Whiteland HSR Qualifier. This pair has about a 5 foot gap over the rest of the field. At last year's meet it only took a mark of 57' 3.25" to win and 50 feet to make the podium. Brosseau was the sole individual that was not a senior from last year's podium.

For the girls we could see a new HSR meet record as Hadley Lucas has thrown to a distance of 51' 10.5" at the first Whiteland HSR qualifier. She will likely repeat as the girls shot put champion and will look to break the meet record. The current record was set in 2008 by Lawrence North's Felicia Johnson with her throw of 50' 2.5". Hannah Alexander looks to be the only other athlete separating herself from the rest of the pack as she has thrown to a distance of 46' 9" in route to winning the HCC Indoor Championship in the event. This year the top eight entries all are at 40+ feet going into the weekend.
