Just like the boys, there have been some great performances so far in the outdoor season on the girls side. With the month of May right around the corner there are some big time meets coming up as we head into the State Tournament in the coming weeks.
Sprints
To start off in the sprints, Heritage Christian junior Kya Crooke is the top 100 performer in the state so far with a 11.46 mark. Crooke, one of the best all around athletes in Indiana also has top 2 marks in the High Jump at 5' 8" and Long Jump at 19' 2". She has proven to be an elite hurdler as well. Fishers senior and University of Louisville recruit Maya Taylor is right behind Crooke in the 100m dash with a 11.48 mark this season after medaling in the event last year. Doubling the distance in the 200m, Jeffersonville Senior and IU Bloomington recruit Lyric Steele appears to hold the top mark in 24.55. In the 400 it's been the underclassman show up front with a sophomore and freshman with the top 2 marks in Indiana. sophomore Ava Winters from Lawrence North holds the top mark in 56.42 with Hamilton Southeastern freshman Anissa Lammie trailing her at 56.53. In the 100 and 300 Hurdles Warren Central Star Laila Smith holds the top mark in 14.38 and 43.96.
Distance
On the distance side, Nicki Southerland from Delta holds the top 800 and 1600 Times by going 2:08.98 and 4:45.35 at the Pendleton Heights Invitational last week. While Southerland has been nearly unbeatable at 800 and 1600, her only loss in the outdoor season so far has been at 3200m to Pendleton Heights junior Ava Jarrell in the electric 3200m showcase event at Carmel that produced 5 top 20 all time performances at 3200 with Jarrell 6th all time at 10:11.87, Southerland 7th at 10:13.37, sophomore and the Cross Country Champion from last fall Libby Dowty 11th at 10:18.55, Fort Wayne Concordia sophomore Mallory Weller 18th at 10:24.94 and Bishop Chatard Sophomore Julia Score 19th at 10:28.59. With only Nicki Southerland departing to college from this group of 5 next fall, it should be a very exciting future watching the other 4 compete against one another at a high level. In the 4x800m Relay Fort Wayne Concordia has already gone 9:09.63 at the New Haven Patriot relays. This is a mark that is almost 30 seconds in front of 2nd in Indiana and 12th all time in Indiana and it's only April.
Jarrell wins the fast heat at the Carmel 3200m Showcase with a time of 10:11.
Field
In the field events, Fort Wayne Carroll sophomore Bailey Sinish owns the best High Jump mark of 5'9" with Kya Crooke of Heritage Christian just behind with a 5'8" Mark. Warren Central's Laila Smith who already owns top marks in both hurdle races also has the top Long Jump mark at 19-3 with Kya Crooke (once again) just trailing behind in 19-2. In the Throws, it's been Hadley Lucas putting on a clinic this season. The Bloomington North Cougar and Wisconsin recruit had the top mark in both the Shot Put and Discus at 49-11 and 170-00 respectively. Her discus throw is a State Record after she already broke the all time shot put record for indoors. In the Pole Vault Greenwood Community senior and Indiana State University recruit Amy Luttrell holds the top mark at 12-3.
