The Avon High School girls cross country team is looking to improve on its 13th place finish at the Indiana State Cross Country meet in 2011. Coach Rosenbrock loses two of his top seniors Jesse McNealy and Taylor Smith, but returns the rest of the starting five from their sectional roster including sophomore Malyka Abramson. Abramson had a rough debut at the state meet last year finishing 98th after a hip injury flared up and caused her to run a minute and a half slower than she he ran at the Carmel Semi-State. She has the top returning time of 18:22.00. She joins a group of sophomores in Kelsie Mothersead, Courtney Kerr, as well as seniors Megan Price, and Mikala Hillis, to form a strong contingent of runners for the Orioles.
Coach Rosebrock says...
"I feel our team is looking really good right now. We lost two great leaders & runners in departed seniors Jesse McNealy and Taylor Smith from last year, but return many runners from our Sectional roster who have been training since last year for this current cross country season. The team's positive attitudes, commitment to their team and goals and hard work has made this group a joy to coach and we're all excited to see them improve and progress throughout the season."
"Senior Hannah Jennings, a former Avon soccer player, and freshman Amanda Grothen are currently the two newcomers to the team who are likely to challenge for a varsity spot throughout the season. In addition, we have several returning sophomores, such as Lauren Heeger, Avery Lane and Alissa Lustgarten who have worked hard over the spring track season and summer conditioning to put themselves in a position to do the same. Finally, senior Victoria Collins has come back strong from missing much of last cross country season to be a leader on and off the course, as well as one of our top runners this season."
"The team has set goals to place top three in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference Team Championship and repeat as Hendricks County, South Putnam Sectional and Ben Davis Regional Team Champions, as well as to advance to State again and improve upon last year's 13th place finish. Other big meets we will be competing at are the Harrison, Ben Davis and FlashRock Invitationals."
