The Mishawaka girls' cross country team placed 8th at the New Haven Semi-State missing out on a trip to the state meet. However, this group of girls led by sophomore Anna Rohrer have high hopes. They are looking to become the first girls team from Mishawaka to ever qualify for state. Rohrer comes in with the top returning time on the team in the 5K, 3200, and 1600 meters. She is the only one on the team who cracked twenty minutes in 2011. The standout sophomore has season bests of 19:17.10 for 5k, 11:11.04 for 3200 meters, and 5:23.89. Rohrer did not compete in the Semi-State meet last season. Juniors Camilla Holt (50th) who comes in with the second fastest 5k time of 20:25.90, and Melissa Rogers form a solid one thru three for the Cavemen. Rogers was 61st in 20:36.00. Junior Hanna Coppens, senior Amanda Zylstra, and senior Holly Wolf round out the returners. Incoming freshman Jessica Duvall has shown promise and is capable of running under twenty minutes. She could enter the mix as well.
Recently the girls traveled to Michigan for the Vikining Invitational. Sophomore Anna Rohrer destroyed the field winning in 17:46 more than 45 seconds than her nearest competitor. Coach Kowalewski says Rohrer is capable of winning every race she enters. The Cavemen placed their starting five in the top 21 spots. Holt came in 11th while freshman Jessica Duvall showed her potential placing 14th. The team finished second to Northridge.
Mishawaka has a chance to make the state tournament, but Rohrer will have to be on her "A" game and the rest of the group will have to step up. Duvall had a good showing in her first high school meet. Look for the team to drop their times over the course of the season and improve on last year's finish.
