Conway, Todd, Provenzano: The big three battle for 3200m crown
The 3200-meter race was the last distance affair of the day and had three sub-nine-minute contenders: Floyd Central's Will Conway, who holds the state record; Cameron Todd, who's IN No. 3; and Carmel's Tony Provenzano, who sat at a slightly distant No. 17.
Unlike in the mile, there was no small breakaway group that took a commanding lead off the bat. At the 1600-meter split, Conway led with 4:34.35 but had seven other runners within a second of him.
With 800 meters left, Conway was still in control, with Provenzano, Westview's Noah Bontrager, and Todd in tow behind him.
Provenzano, biding his time, struck on the last lap, circling the track in under a minute and winning by five seconds. Conway held second place with 100 meters to go but was caught from behind by a charging Todd in the final meters.
Provenzano spent last season in the shadow of his teammate, Kole Mathison-second at sectionals, second at regionals, second at state. But, this season, he swept the all three stages of the tournament, came within .26 of Futsum Zienasellassie's state meet record, and is now 11th in Indiana history. He will run for the Hoosiers at IU Bloomington next year with Conway set to compete at the University of Tennessee.
Tony Provenzano and Cameron Todd talk about the competiton and what's next for them after state 3200m performances.
