IHSAA Boys Track & Field State Championship Recap

Northington takes 400m dash in upset victory

The 400-meter dash this season was headlined by Dehnm Holt of North Central (Ind.) and his state-leading time of 47.63 from regionals. Holt was followed by 13 runners who had run under 49 seconds.

Evansville North's Cainen Northington, the No. 4 runner coming in, was victorious on the day, running 48.38. Holt finished .30 seconds behind Northington for third.

This year each heat would featured at least one scorer with heat three (the fastest heat) making up less than half of the scorers. This was the first time that has occurred since at least 2001. (Up until 2004, there were four heats but from 2001-04, the fourth heat had at least half of the runners who scored.)

Franklin Central's Ivan Weaver was ranked second in the state this season, but a slower seed time from regionals meant he was placed in heat two. No matter, though, as Weaver ran a time good enough for second overall with his teammate Kervenson Clerger also earning a podium finish in 6th.
