Indiana Seniors of the Year- Izaiah Steury and Karina James

Izaiah Steury (#72) Representing Indiana at the Eastbay National Championships

Izaiah Steury - An All-Time Great Career

Izaiah Steury from Angola has a story that would make a great book. His running career, it feels, simply mimics that story- drive, hard work, overcoming tough odds, and succeeding like few have before him. Izaiah Steury stands out in a senior class of standouts- a class that took 20 of the first 23 spots in the IHSAA State Finals and is most deserving of being named at the Indiana Senior of the Year.

How dominant was Steury in his senior class? How about, by our statistical research, as many as 16-straight wins during the IHSAA calendar season over two years. His only IHSAA cross country loss over the last two years came at this year's State Finals where he came 1.2 seconds shy of a repeating as Indiana State Champion.

Steury won races in both dominant and strategic fashion. He won both running away and tactically. After an undefeated year up to the State Finals, Steury lost a tough battle in final sprint to Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff of Columbus North but still managed to run 15:23 on the wet, muddy course in Terre Haute.

After losing that tough race, Steury responded by finishing runner-up at the Midwest Regional of the Eastbay National Championships to qualify for the finals. His time of 14:53 was outstanding on the tough Kenosha course.

In San Diego, Steury overcame a poor start to move through the entire field to finish eighth overall. Steury's performance earned him Second Team All-American status.

Steury will take his talents to Notre Dame after his amazing career at Angola.
