Meet Summary · Mar 26, 2010
Fast times were produced on a cool and rainy evening at NC State for the high school 3200 meter races held in the midst of the Raleigh Relays college meet on Friday night. Leading the Virginian participants were Jamestown senior Colin Mearns and Landstown senior Stephanie Frenchik placing third each in arguably the greatest 3200 meter fields ever assembled for a high school meet in the state of North Carolina.
Mearns, only two weeks removed from his national title in the mile at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships, finished five seconds off the surprise winner Isaac Presson of Asheville (9:00.87) with an 8 second PR of 9:05.03 and just behind Foot Locker finalist Blake Williams of Northern Durham for second place. With his early season performance, Mearns can realistically start thinking about a sub 9 minute time this season which would add him to a very short list of past Virginians to have ran under the time.
Frenchik (pictured right by Ryan Kelly), a recruit for Indiana University, took an even bigger chunk off her previous best by 22 seconds with her time on Friday of 10:37.01. An All-American and state runner-up this past indoor season, Frenchik's opening performance to the 2010 outdoor season is the fastest 3200 meter time ever recorded by a girls' distance runner from the Eastern Region with Hickory's Jennifer Boyd as the previous fastest all-time at 10:46.
Also running well in the same race with Frenchik and competing on her future home track at NC State was Mountain View senior Kaitlyn Davis, who dropped her all-time best to 10:44.32 with her 5th place effort. Davis, a state champion as a junior indoors in the 3200 meter run and state champion in cross country this past fall, had been stuck in the 10:50's for two years before her breakthrough run in front of her future college coachces and teammates this weekend.

Two outstanding high school 3200 meter fields are set for Friday at the Raleigh Relays which feature several of Virginia's top distance runners. NSIC mile champion Colin Mearns of Jamestown will be looking to achieve a 3200 PR two weeks after dropping 7 seconds off his mile PR at the indoor nationals against virtually all of North Carolina's top distance harriers including Nike Indoor Nationals 2 mile runner-up (9:02) and Foot Locker All-American Jake Hurysz of Eastern Alamance (NC).
In the girls' race, 3A state cross country champion Kaitlyn Davis of Mountain View and NSIC mile All-American Stephanie Frenchik of Landstown with PR's just under 11 minutes for 3200, look to run significantly under in a stellar field with a loaded field headlined by Foot Locker All-American freshmen Wesley Frazier of North Carolina and three girls with 1600 bests right under or at 5 minutes from the homestate in Carolyn Baskir, Samantha George, and Laura Hoer. Lee-Davis High School will have their trio of state caliber runners in Bonny Turnage, Stephanie Cario, and Amanda Lineberry also competing together at 3200 meters for the first time ever.
The race is held at NC State University's outdoor track facility in Raleigh, North Carolina. Girls race at 7:05 PM on Friday with the boys to follow at 7:20 PM.

Meet Summary · Mar 14, 2010
Ocean Lakes senior Justin Hunter (pictured above by Don Rich) finally showed the rest of nation what we have known all along in Virginia about his talent and jumping ability. Competing in his first high school track nationals, Hunter became a national champion in all three jumping events. Two of the events in the long and triple jump, Hunter actually placed second in the competition but was the first US finisher behind winners from Canada to make Hunter as the national champion in both events. In Sunday's triple jump, Charles Akomolafe from Brampton, Ontario overtook Hunter in the finals with the leading mark of 50'6.25". Hunter became the US champion with his runner-up and US #3 mark of 49'9.25". Checking to see if the feat of winning national titles in all three jumping events has ever been accomplished ever by not only a Virginia high school athlete, but any athlete in meet history.
Jamestown senior Colin Mearns (pictured above by Don Rich) was not considered as a favorite to win the boys' mile at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships with a 1600 PR which converts to around 4:20 for a full mile. The recent VA 2A 1600 and 3200 state champion made a huge drop in time to pull out the upset national title against a field of more proven sub 4:20 milers with a 7 second PR victory at 4:13.08! His time converts not only to a state leading 4:11.66 1600 meter time, but ranks him #12 all-time in Virginia high school indoor history.
Churchland senior Cydney Robinson dominated her section of the girls 800 meter run on the final lap to pull away to win her slower section in a time of 2:11.95. Her time ended up holding up to place her third overall following the fast section and earn her second All-American honors of the weekend after anchoring Churchland to a fifth place SMR finish on Friday with a 2:12 split. Her time at NSIC is the fastest by a Virginia girl indoors at 800 meters since Nike Indoor Nationals champion Katie Doswell back in 2006.
First Colonial's Teiara Denmark became the second All-American in the girls' field events from Virginia at NSIC (Lizzie Powell - Pole Vault) with her fifth place leap of 39'0.25" in the girls triple jump.
The future of Virginia distance running looks bright as Lake Braddock 9th grader Sophie Chase (pictured left by Don Rich) became the state's second freshmen mile champion this past weekend in her dominant six second victory on Sunday at the National Scholastic Indoor
Championships. Chase, who anchored Lake Braddock's DMR on Friday nearly to a national title with her sub 5 minute 1600 meter leg, clocked a time just above 5 minutes for the full mile in her 5:01.67 victory for the Virginia 3A state 3200 meter champion. Chase's time nearly beat the time of the seeded championship mile race later on Sunday, which had a winning time of 4:59. Landstown's Stephanie Frenchik took charge midway through to break up a slow early pace and then held on for fourth place and All-American honors in 5:04.72.
Henrico's DreQuan Hoskey earned All-American honors in the finals of the 60 meter hurdles with a fifth place finish, while Chris Dobbins of Christiansburg just missed a top 6 finish by thousandths of a second as his time of 8.21 was equal through the hundredth of a second with the sixth place finisher.
In field events action today, Ocean Lakes senior Justin Hunter will be attempting to make a national titles sweep of the jumping events as he is slated to compete in the triple jump after winning national titles on Friday in the long jump and high jump. Hunter is a favorite and one of the top seeds in the triple jump.
Three boys' pole vaulters from Virginia have advanced onto today's finals after vaulting career bests yesterday in the preliminary flights with Lake Braddock's Matt Hoogland at 15'1.75" and Jefferson Forest's Josh Drablos and Mills Godwin's Eric Zwarycz both clearing 14'10". Hoogland is ranked fourth heading into today with his performance yesterday.

Interview · Feb 23, 2010
Landstown senior Darrell Wesh (pictured above by Ryan Kelly) heads into the 2010 VHSL Group AAA State Indoor Track & Field Championships as the top seed and US leader in the 55 meter dash (6.35), which includes one of the fastest fields in recent meet history with four entrants having clocked times under 6.40 this season. Against a loaded field, Wesh will be attempting to win the 55 meter dash state title last year which eluded his older sister Marlena Wesh's attempt in the sprint triple. As the state runner-up last spring in the 200 meter dash and top returnee from the 100 meter dash, Wesh has really stepped up after his sister's graduation and exceled in the short sprints this winter by consistently running 6.40 or faster in the 55 dash. The Virginia Tech signee also will be featured on the state leading 4x400 meter relay (3:25) on Saturday at Boo Williams. Read more for interview with Darrell Wesh...

At the 2010 Beach District Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday, Landstown swept the team titles with Stephanie Frenchik and Darrell Wesh leading the Eagles with a pair of individual titles. At the Boo Williams Sportsplex, Frenchik (pictured right by Ryan Kelly) clocked impressive times of 5:06 and 2:58 in her 1600/1000 meter double, while national leader Darrell Wesh was a hundredth of a second off his US #1 time in the 55 meter dash with a 6.37 performance and also posted a personal best time of 35.25 in the 300 meter dash. First Colonial senior Teiara Denmark made a clean sweep of the jumping events, 15 race videos are now added from this past Friday's Beach District Championships.

Meet Summary · Feb 06, 2010
Leave it to the Eastern Region to give something to get excited about in a snowed out weekend from track meets for the majority of the state. Shakeela Saunders (pictured above by Ryan Kelly), Justin Hunter, and the Western Branch girls 4x200 had the leading performances on day two of the Atlantic Coast Invitational at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton on Saturday. Saunders stormed to a US #1 and VA #10 all-time 1:14.46 500, while Hunter cleared a US #2 height of 6'10" in his first high jump competition of the season. The Western Branch girls are capable of setting a state record later this season in the 4x200 after their US #2 1:40.72 performance this weekend.

While the invitational mile and 500 meter races were expected to be the featured races of the 2010 Montgomery Invitational and certainly did not disappoint with some of fastest times in the US, the top performance may have come from the boys 3200 with Chantilly senior Chris Foley clocking a US #1 9:14 performance. Foley had to shut his season down after the state cross country meet due to illness, but appears to have been training well since then as shown with his performance in Landover. More to come from Montgomery Invitational including photo gallery by Nicoll Knudsen and a full meet summary.

While the Nike Cross Southeast Regionals has pulled away many of the state's top girls either competing on contending teams or trying to secure one of the 5 individual quaifier spots, tradition and dreams of sunny San Diego still keeps the best Virginia boys coming back to Foot Locker South as the top ranked half dozen runners in the state will be racing on Saturday at McAlpine Greenway Park in Charlotte with top 10 aspirations. While the best Virginia girls who will be racing in Charlotte will be considered long shots of making it to nationals, one upside for both Brooke Point senior Katherine Walker and Lake Braddock freshmen Sophie Chase is neither has any problem pushing the pace and running up front, which is necessary in order to put yourself in position for a top 10 national qualifier position on the fast and flat McAlpine 5K course. MileSplit US will have on-site coverage for MileStat.com led by scrunners.com webmaster John Olson as a total of 422 runners are entered in Foot Lockter South from the state of Virginia.

This year's VHSL State Championships could be a historic meet for the Northwest Region. The Northwest Region has arguably the greatest assembly of individual state title contenders with a big three in seniors Kaitlyn Davis of Mountain View, Ariel Karabinus of Osbourn Park, and Katherine Walker of Brooke Point. Meanwhile, the Mountain View boys will look to not only get on the state meet podium for the second time in three years, but also claim the school’s first state title. In the first cross country season without Thomas Porter leading the Wildcats, Mountain View is in its best situation since the school opened five years ago to win a state cross country team title.
Interview · Nov 10, 2009
Landstown senior Stephanie Frenchik’s time of 18:22 at Bells Mill Park at the Eastern Region Meet last Thursday is significant because it is three seconds faster than the 2008 performance by last year’s Group AAA state cross country champion Stacey Nobles on the same course at the 2008 Eastern Region Meet. Frenchik had just barely qualified for the state meet last year with a 15th place finish in the regional race and fast forward one year later and she just won the Eastern Region title by 33 seconds with hopes of finishing high in the field and possibly contend at Great Meadow this weekend.
Meet Summary · Nov 06, 2009
The Grassfield boys regained regional bragging rights in claiming their first Eastern Region cross country team title over rival Western Branch with a top five spread of 56 seconds and all five scorers among the top 20 ranging from times 15:52 to 16:49. Despite losing their top three runners from a year ago, the Ocean Lakes girls repeated easily as champions by a 46 point margin. Landstown senior Stephanie Frenchik maintained her regional dominance with a personal best 18:22 win, while Drew Paisley made it a Beach District individual sweep as the Ocean Lakes senior scored a mild upset 15:37 victory.

The Beach District boys' race should look something like this year. Not too different from last year with a Kellam runner running way out in front then followed by a pack of Ocean Lakes harriers. Bobby Peavey of Kellam should easily defend his district title, while also looking ahead to bigger wins at the regional and state meet. He will be more interested at the district meet if his team can give the defending team champions from Ocean Lakes a scare. The Dolphins return a potent top three in Drew Paisley, Conor Doan, and Seth Cunningham, but also had four graduations from their 2007 top seven. Meanwhile, Kellam returns their entire top 6 from a district runner-up squad last year.
The Ocean Lakes girls could possibly have a perfect score at the district meet with the top four returnees from last year's race including All-State cross country runner Stacey Nobles. Landstown's Stephanie Frenchik could stop those plans of a top 5 sweep though as she really improved during the track season with a 3200 best of 11:22 as well as running on the state champion 4x800 meter relay.
