The Brian Watkins I-95 Classic had a decent gathering of Northwest Region teams at Potomac Senior High School on Saturday. Host school Potomac showed just why they will have competitive squads in the region on both sides with their individual performances on Saturday.
One of the top performers at the meet was Potomac's Brice Mathews, who broke 50 seconds in the 400 meter dash in a 49.67 winand came back with a solid 200 meter clocking of 21.95. Teammate Wesley Jones also finished first in two events as the 100 meter dash winner at 11.34 and leaping to mark of 22'4.25".
Another great field event performance came from a Potomac Senior athlete with Pearl Bickersteth (pictured right by John Herzog) clearing 5'6" to automatically qualify for the state meet. Bickersteth is the returning outdoor state runner-up in the event as she cleared a personal best 5'8" last June at Todd Stadium. Read more...

There are plenty of activities perfectly suited for dreadful weather similar to yesterday's. Read a book. Watch a movie. Huddle by a fireplace to stop shivering. Of course, those all involve staying indoors and out of the rain, wind and mud. For most people, running 3.1 miles in the elements is at the bottom of the want-to-do list. Colonial Forge senior Kaylan Comer (pictured right by John Herzog), however, doesn't agree. "I love this weather," Comer said. "It's definitely cross country weather." Comer embraced the miserable conditions as she glided across the rain-soaked course at the Commonwealth District Cross Country Championships at Willowmere Park. Read full story...

The state\'s top ranked boys and girls teams from Midlothian both survived scares at the Great Meadows Invitational in their opening races. The Nike Team Nationals Southeast #1 ranked squad in Midlothian ran well as shown by their low team total of 55 points in the competitive meet, but the NTN SE #6 ranked and two-time defending AA state champions Brentsville proved to be just as good as they finished two points shy of them in second place with 57 points. Midlothian junior Jason Witt took the individual title in a time of 16:03.15. Meanwhile, the Midlothian girls had two of their seven runners drop out of the race including top returnee and 4:53 miler M.C. Miller yet their amazing depth and talent was showcased still in dominating the #2 ranked team in the state and #5 ranked team in the NTN Southeast region in Brentsville by a 65 point margin of victory. The Lady Trojans were led by the Lautzenheiser twins, Kathleen (1st, 19:20.92) and Leia (3rd, 19:46.59), as the freshmen pair finished first and third respectively. More to come from Great Meadows...
