MITCHELL RUNS 47.03, WHITE ANSWERS WITH 47.18 ON THE SAME DAY
Two Indiana seniors almost dipped under 47 seconds on the same day.
A year ago at Eastern Relays, Phoenix Boyer of Indianapolis Bishop Chatard ran 47.39 -- a PR, and the fastest time at that meet. Camran Mitchell just ran 47.03 at the same meet and beat it, while also claiming the #1 spot on the current state leaderboards.
Boyer was not in this year's race, he was at the Lafayette Jefferson Sprinters Showcase on Apr 17 running 47.92, a season's best down from 48.49 at the Mike Ford Invitational the week before, but still 0.53 off his own career mark. at Lafayette, he placed second to fellow senior Keith White, who won in a PR of 47.18, down from 48.03 at the EACS Championship Meet six days earlier. White is ranked second in Indiana, while Boyer slots into third, but don't sleep on him. He competed at New Balance Nationals Outdoor last June and won the Midwest Meet of Champions in 48.11.
James Bosco of Bloomington North is fourth at 48.85 from the Bloomington North vs. Brown County meet on Apr 7. Eastyn Recker of Jasper sits fifth at 48.88 from the 2026 Tri-State Spring Showcase on Apr 10.
But back to Mitchell. He's been on a tear. Just weeks ago ran 50.20. Last week he ran 48.32. On Apr 17 at Eastern Relays he ran 47.03. The Charlestown senior has dropped more than three seconds in less than a month. He didn't stop at the 400m, either. Mitchell also ran 21.89 in the 200m at Eastern Relays - a PR in that event too.
Nationally, the gap is real. Davis DeGroot of Bonneville in Utah leads the country at 45.46 from the Pine View Invitational on Mar 20. Quincy Wilson of Bullis School in Virginia ran 45.48 at the Arcadia Invitational on Apr 10 for second and Joshua Shelton of Pearland in Texas is third at 45.91 from the Texas A&M Bluebonnet High School Invitational on Mar 6.
Mitchell's 47.03 puts him tied 28th in the country. He has been dropping time at a rate that makes that number feel temporary. Stay tuned.
