Four Indiana Freshmen and Sophomores Open With Top-10 Marks
King, Ritchie, Mattingly, and McHugh already have state-leading marks
The Class of 2029 and 2028 have put up some of the state's top marks through the first weeks of Indiana's 2026 outdoor season. Aaron King and Preston Ritchie headline the boys side, while Madison Mattingly and Ruth McHugh have opened strong on the girls side.
BOYS
King threw 48-9.5 for second place at Northridge vs. Westview vs. Bremen on Mar. 30, a PR that ranks first among Indiana freshmen in the shot put and is tied for 26th in the state, regardless of grade. At the same meet he also threw 147-6 in the discus, a PR. Indoors this season he threw 43-7.25 to place 11th at the Bulldog Invite 4A-6A Schools Morning Session on Mar. 14.
Ritchie ran 50.24 at Northridge vs. Westview vs. Bremen on Mar. 30, a PR that leads all Indiana sophomores in the 400m, and ranks eighth in the state. At the same meet he also posted a 200m PR of 23.76. His 2025 outdoor 400m best was 52.30, and as an eighth grader he ran 55.50 at the Indiana State Middle School Championships on May 18, 2024.
GIRLS
Mattingly won both the 100m and long jump at the Early Bird Showcase on Mar. 31, running 12.28 and jumping 19-2.5, both PRs. The 12.28 ranks second among Indiana freshmen in the 100m. She had previously run 12.67 at the Hoosier South Relays on Mar. 19 and jumped 17-7.75 at the same meet.
McHugh won the 400m at the Archdiocesan Championships on Apr. 8 in a PR of 59.03, which leads all Indiana freshmen in the event and ranks third in the state regardless of grade. She also ran PRs of 13.64 in the 100m and 27.95 in the 200m at Bishop Chatard vs Guerin on Apr. 4, her first high school meet.
