Nayyir Newash-Campbell's 2023 season is off to a wonderful start. The Plainfield Senior is picking up right where he left off from last year's season that saw him contribute large points to a State Title team at the IHSAA State meet last June.

At this past weekend's MVP Vibe Fest in Chicago, Newash-Campbell added a new feat to his continuously growing resume by breaking the Indiana indoor State record in the 400 meter dash.

Newash-Campbell's time of 48.56 broke the previous state record by only one hundredth of a second and that time currently sits in the Top 30 in the entire nation.

Newash-Campbell won the 400 meters at the state meet last season and placed 3rd in the 200 meter dash to help his Plainfield team win the state title.

The indoor state record could set the stage for the year to come for Newash-Campbell and the whole Plainfield team.

Rachel Mehringer of Forest Park (third from left, neon uniform in photo above) also enters this season in State Title Defense mode and has already had hot start to the 2023 season.

Mehringer posted a 8.55 in the 60 meter hurdles at the Indiana State University Open on Saturday in a dominating win.

As we mentioned, Mehringer is a defending state champion and will be attempting the three-peat in the 100 Hurdles when outdoor season rolls along.

With Newash-Campbell and Mehringer's performances over the weekend there have now been four indoor state records set in the 2023 season in Indiana. The two recent performances join Kole Mathison's 1600 meter record (converted from a mile) and Kate Henselmeier's 400 meter indoor record.

Could we see more records fall before the season gets taken outdoors? Only time, and more great performances, will tell.
