Indiana Runner Open Kicks Off IR Indoor Series at Taylor

Izaiah Steury leads a strong set of entries at the IR Open Saturday at Taylor University.

The Indiana indoor club season really gets started tomorrow with the Indiana Runner Open meet held at Taylor University. The action is slated to get underway at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Kesler Student Activity Center. The meet is the second larger open meet in Indiana so far this winter and is the most competitive thus far.

We spoke quickly with IR Open meet director Derek Leininger. "Indoor track & field is back! After the 2020 indoor season was cut short and the 2021 indoor season was nonexistent for Indiana high school, we are excited to host the 2022 Indiana Runner Indoor Track & Field Opener tomorrow! We have approximately 450 athletes of all ages scheduled for tomorrow and we are excited to watch them all compete."

Leininger added, "Obviously Covid-19 is still a concern and we are trying to host this event while being smart and safe. We have scheduled field events and running events at different times to try to limit the number of athletes/spectators inside the fieldhouse at the same time. We are encouraging people to wear masks, socially distance, and to stay home if they are sick. Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs so that we can spread throughout the entire fieldhouse and socially distance as much as possible."

The action will include a few relays as well as a full set of individual events. The girls events will precede the boys in each event.
