Nick Hruskoci was a key player in Cathedral's DMR state record in 2019
Earlier this week, we posed the question of if one event could be added to the outdoor state meet, what would you want it to be.
After over 400 total votes, the Distance Medley Relay came out on top with 35% of the votes. The distance running fans came out to vote, with the 2K steeplechase in 2nd and 5K in 3rd. Over the past couple of years the overall interest and focus on the DMR by some teams has been interesting to watch. Cathedral took a special interest in it last season. They not only broke the indoor DMR record with a time of 10:03.29, but they kept that momentum going all throughout the outdoor season and raced at NBN Outdoors, winning the championship division in the states first sub-10 time of 9:58.91. Their time may be one that is tough to catch in the near future but as training improves we should see these DMR times drop even more.
If I had to pick one of these events to add, it should be the 4x200. The four states around us, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky and Michigan all compete the event at their state championship. Indiana competes it as an indoor event, although the events we race indoors very much vary from what is done outdoors. The only outdoor racing that Indiana sprinters see of the 4x200 is if their team attends a meet that decides to compete it, which is rare to find as most stick to the standard events. Being a distance fan though, I do have a big spot for the Distance Medley to be added as well.
But of course, none of this means that the DMR or the 4x200 will be added to the line up, it does give an idea of what people would like to see added to the end of season showcase if there was ever to be an expansion of events.
