Indiana sent a dozen athletes to New York City for New Balance Nationals this past weekend. 8 girls and 6 boys competed as well as 1 relay team. To kick the weekend off, Mikeisha Covington of Warren Central competed in three events, the emerging elite 60, 400 and the championship 200. Her best finish coming in the 400, where she placed 2nd behind mid distance star Athing Mu. In the field, high jump star Nate Patterson earned All-American honors, placing 6th with a height of 6' 10.75". Covington's teammate Tacoria Humphrey also competed in the high jump, in the emerging elite division, clearing a new PR of 5' 5" and placing 7th. Lawrence North's Nathan Stone represented Indiana in the championship pole vault, placing 17th with a height of 15' 3.5"
As just a freshman, Lucas Guerra left it on the track, clocking a 4:36.02 mile to place 12th in the freshman division. Jenna Barker ran a 5:10.25 mile in the EE race to earn a 16th place finish. Claire Sievern raced the EE 800, finishing 29th with a 2:18.37. The real distance stud of the weekend came out of Evansville, Evan Sorensen won the boys EE 2 mile, with a time of 9:21.2.
In the 400, two boys competed, Carmel's Spencer Gudgel placed 32nd in the prelims in 50.26. Sean Johnson earned a 26th place finish in the EE division in 50.75.
Johnson competed later in the championship 4x400, with his team American Speed to assist in a 16th place finish in 3:25 flat.
The girl to watch all weekend, Semira Killebrew, competed in both the championship 200 and 60 dash. She performed not as well as she would have like in the 200, placing 9th in 24.38. She made it to the finals of the 60 dash, ultimately placing 4th overall in 7.41.
