Interview with the indoor 3200 state champ Sophia Rigg of Zionsville Community.
MileSplit IN: How long have you been running? Who got you started in it?
I have been running since fifth grade when my parents encouraged me to try it.
MileSplit IN: Outside of running what is something you are passionate about?
I don't do many activities other than run but i enjoy playing recreational games with my friends.
MileSplit IN: What's something about you people don't really know that you want to share?
I did not move to the states until I was in third grade. I was born in England and lived there until moving to Puerto Rico for two years.
MileSplit IN: What are your goals for this outdoor season?
My goals are to break five minutes in the mile as well as place in the top few spots at state.
MileSplit IN: What does a typical training week look like for you?
Typically we will have a long run Sunday and 2-3 workout days depending on the week. During the other days we will typically do a five mile run at a comfortable pace.
MileSplit IN: What did you do in the off season/cross country season to get you prepared for the outdoor season?
I have been working on the little things like stretching, rolling, and strengthening (weights) , as well as getting in a lot of hard training such as reps and tempo runs.
MileSplit IN: Your mom is an assistant coach at Zionsville. What is that like? Do you feel it helps you?
My mom has always been a part of my running career, personally I don't mind having her as my coach I think she is a great one and pushes every girl on the team to be the best they can be. I definitely think she makes me a better runner however she is a very good coach for all the girls on the team.
MileSplit IN: How well do you think you'll be able to compete against the stacked junior and senior classes this year and make your way to Bloomington in June?
I am going to try my best to compete with some very talented girls and hopefully be right there with them.MileSplit IN: What is your ultimate goal in the sport?
My main goal is to compete for a DI school at the collegiate level.
