The Kokomo Lady Kats Track-and-Field team scored 52 points which was good enough for 6th place at the Charlie Riley Invitational held at North Central High School, Saturday.
Carmel High School won the 10-team meet with 151 points.
Leading the Lady Kats was senior Summer Blackamore who won the shot put and discus. The Indiana State University signee threw the shot a personal best 44'2" and threw the discus 131'07". For her efforts, Blackamore was honored with the meet's Women's Most Outstanding Performance Award.
Other Lady Kat individual placers included: Senior Brianna Lancaster who placed third in the 100-meter hurdles (17.59); freshman Lana Pham, 3rd in the high jump (5'2"); sophomore Deju Miller, 4th in the high jump (5'0"); senior Haleigh Parrish 4th in the pole vault (7'6"), and sophomore Quaynika Merriweather 5th in the long jump (15'5").
In the relays, the Lady Kats 3200-meter relay team (Cinnamon Andrews, Brooke Smith, Meghan and Grace Burton) placed 8th (11:52.71), and the 1600-meter relay team (Andrews, Pham, Miller and Lancaster) placed 4th (4:25.80).
"We had some ladies out so I knew we didn't have the depth to score as many points as I had projected. So we changed the game plan and I challenged the ladies to have a 'show-and-prove' meet. Show up and prove to anyone watching that we are for real and we will be here all day fighting for points," said K.O. Jackson, KHS head coach. "In the events we entered, we were looking for third place or higher and we almost accomplished that feat. And in the events we placed below third, we got season best or personal-best efforts. Knowing we can do this brings a level of confidence that when we get or whole team together, we are going to be very dangerous."
