Salute To Seniors: Carl Smith - Bloomington South

What was your most memorable race?

The Conference Indiana track meet my junior year, where I ran a 18 second PR. It finally gave me some confidence in track as well.

Who was your biggest competition?

One of my favorite things about Indiana running is that the guys are all so friendly and I've become friends with a lot of my fellow runners from other schools. That said we do get pretty competitive out on the course or track, but there's not one person, or team i feel has been my "biggest competition".

Out of all of your high school accomplishments which stands out the most?

A race that stands out to me is winning the Blue Race at FlashRock which kind of came out of nowhere for me, and and set me up for a great last cross country season.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

I'm fairly happy with how my high school career went. I would probably be able to do better if given another chance, but right now I'm more excited about the future than the past, and what could have been.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

The biggest obstacle I had to learn to overcome would probably be learning how to actually race rather than just going out and running which  I still do more often than not.

What will you miss the most?

I think the thing I will miss most is the camaraderie between runners, I don't see it so much in college as it seems a far more competitive world than high school has been.

Do you have any advice for younger athletes?

My advice to younger runners would be to listen to your coach, do what they tell you to, and to run the work outs as they're given to you. As fast or as slow as it seems to you, going really fast on the first interval, and then way slow on the last isn't going to help you nearly as much.

What are your college plans?

My college plans are to study history through the Hutton Honor college at Indiana University and run both cross country and track there.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would like to thank all the coaches I've had over the years, especially Coach Williams, all my teammates who have been a great family, all my fellow high school runners from Indiana just for running and being awesome, and everyone involved with Indiana running!
