An 800 meter showdown was set to take place Thursday night at Guerin Catholic High School's track for the 2023 Hamilton County Championships.

Carmel's Kole Mathison, the state's best distance runner over the last 18 months, and Colin Lakomek of Westfield, the top returner in the 800 time wise from a year ago, were set to run the open 800 as their main event of the night.

Mathison took home the victory in a blazing 1:50.80 with a last lap of around 56 seconds after coming through the first 400 meters in around 54 seconds. Mathison's time is good enough for a new state lead overtaking Martinsville's Martin Barco's top spot of 1:52.42.

Three other athletes were under 1:54 in this 800 meter race. Matthew Kim of Fishers placed second in 1:52.65 which now ranks 3rd in the state behind Mathison and Barco.

Lakomek placed third in 1:52.67, a new lifetime best, and Charlie Leedke of Carmel placed fourth in 1:53.12 good for the fifth best time in the state this year.
