Rain and Lightning Stop CN Classic, Meet Cancelled Mid-race

The Rick Weinheimer Classic was cancelled due to weather after a stop and go morning at Ceraland Park on Saturday.

After a brief downpour early in the morning, it looked as though fans and runners could be in for cloudy but pleasant weather. However, nagging thunder would delay the meet for almost an hour before the girls race was finally allowed to get started at 9:55.

Around 10:05, a nearby lightning strike forced IHSAA officials to stop the event - more than halfway through the girls race. Runners were pulled from the course mid-race, and asked to return to the team buses. A few moments later the skies truly opened up, forcing the meet to be cancelled.

The early parts of the girls race were going about as predicted, with Columbus North putting two runners in the lead pack while Noblesville's runners ran in a tight group not far behind. It's impossible to say which team would have had the upper hand had race gone the full distance. Columbus North and Noblesville will not have another chance to run head-to-head until Nike Twilight at the end of the regular season.
