Amaya Turner Breaks Indoor 800 and 400 Records

At Saturday's UK High School Invitational, tons of Indiana athletes made their way to compete against some of the best athletes from OH, KY, IL, IN, TN and many other states, but one girl made sure to make a statement against her instate competition.

Wheeler High School junior, Amaya Turner, managed to run a lifetime best of 2:12.02 in the 800, an event she usually doesn't run during the season. This time not only marked her first time under 2:15 but it also breaks the indoor 800m state record that was held by Elizabeth Stanhope and Abigail Lynch

Stanhope and Lynch set the record just last season when they both ran a 2:12.10 just a week apart from each other in early March. Stanhope went on to break the state outdoor record with a 2:06.62 with Lynch running a 2:09.83 in the same race.

Amaya Turner now moves into the top 25 all-time in Indiana across both indoor and outdoor times. Her time of 2:12.02 puts her No.15 in the nation currently.

At the UK Invite she also competed in the 400, taking 2nd in a time of 55.36 for a new indoor PR and breaking the indoor 400 record as well.

This time puts her No.14 in the country currently. She is already on the top 25 list all-time for both indoor and outdoor times, running a 55.09 at last year's outdoor state meet.

The previous record of 55.60 was held by Warren Central's Mikeisha Covington, who ran the time back in 2017 at the New Balance Indoor Nationals.

Last spring, Turner competed at the state meet in both the 200 and 400. She took 14th in the prelims of the 200 and 3rd in the 400 finals. She may have a tough decision to make with her coaches now with those stellar times in both the 400 and the 800.
