Recent Brebeuf Jesuit High School grad Semira Killebrew announced on Tuesday she had made a decision to switch her collegiate plans, announcing her signing to the University of Florida.
Previous to her commitment to the Gators, Killebrew had been recruited by, and joined the University of North Carolina--the Tar Heels, however, had some changes to their coaching staff recently, prompting a reevaluation from Killebrew. Ultimately, she made a decision to move on and join the University of Florida, coached Mike Holloway. Killebrew joins an already loaded sprint/hurdle class with Grace Stark(MI) and Alexis Brown(TX).
"They were apart of my original recruiting process, so they've always been considered. My conversations with Coach Holloway and Coach Mann definitely confirmed that they have the same vision as me. I can pursue my academic and athletic careers on a very high level." Killebrew said of her decision to change paths. Academics has always been a key factor for her throughout her search for her future college as she plans to study in the medical field.
In the past month, Semira Killebrew exploded on to the national scene like never before. First up, at Brooks PR, she ran a lifetime best of 11.24 in the 100 -- the fastest American high school time in 2019 -- winning the event and setting a new state record at the same time. Then she headed down to Florida to compete in the USATF U20 champs, where she would take third in the 100, earning herself a spot on the 4x100 relay team for the Pan American U20 Championships this weekend in Costa Rica.
This past season, The University of Florida women placed sixth in the NCAA D1 Finals for track and field with 6 of their 32 points coming from a sprint event, the 400. Reloading this sprint group with these three should prove to be good for the program in the long run.
"I took my last official visit to Florida, and completely loved it, as well as the coaching staff and the team. It was perfect."
