The final day of competition at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships resulted in two Indiana athletes earning spots on Team USA for the IAAF World Championships in Moscow August 10-13. Kylie Hutson (Terre Haute, Ind. / Nike) finished 2nd in the Pole Vault and De'Sean Turner (Bloomington, Ind. / New Balance) finished 3rd in the 3000m Steeplechase to qualify for the IAAF World Championships.
Turner a 2012 graduate of Indiana University and a 2008 graduate of Warren Central ran 8:25.56 which is the fastest time ever by an Indiana native. The previous fastest time was 8:27.62 by Jared Cordes in 2007. "I am very excited. After college, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I stuck with it, and hard work pays off. I have to thank New Balance, my coach and my agent as they have done a lot for me, and I'm happy to be in this position, " offered Turner following his race.
Hutson, a 2010 graduate of Indiana State University and 2006 graduate of Terre Haute North Vigo cleared 15'-1" (4.60 meters) on her first attempt to punch her ticket to Moscow. 2012 Olympic gold medalist Jenn Suhr won clearing 15'-5" (4.70 meters). "I still have a lot of work to do. I'm going to go to Moscow looking for a medal. I'm really excited to be on the team," stated Hutson to the media.
In other action on Sunday, Turner's training parter and fellow teammate while competing for Indiana University, Andrew Poore (Bloomington, Ind. / adidas) finished 4th in the 3000m Steeplechase running 8:26.82. His time is the second fastest time ever for an Indiana native; behind the time turned in by Turner. Cory Martin (Bloomington, Ind. / Nike) finished 4th in the Shot Put with a throw of 67-9 ¾. Purdue's Geoffrey Davis leaped 7-2 ½ in the High Jump to finish fifth. Vera Schmitz (Bloomington, Ind.) competed in the Pole Vault but did not clear a height.
