Carmel High School never has a problem getting runners to come out for cross country season and 2012 is no exception. Seventy-six runners have come out this year in hopes of leading the Greyhounds to a state championship. Last year, they finished third behind Columbus North and Hamilton Southeastern. After those teams lost runners to graduation, Carmel looks to be the top team in the state this year returning all five of their top five from a year ago.
Leading the way for Carmel is a duo of seniors Charlie Watson and Patrick Appleton who finished 23rd and 24th at the Indiana State Cross Country Meet. They also come in with the number two and number four times for returners in the Hoosier State. Watson has a personal best of 15:36. Appleton's personal best if 15:38. Daniel Williams, Robert Browning, and Michael George round out the experienced top five. The group has an impressive 1-5 split of 42.90 seconds!
Coach Bell says he just got back from taking the top 31 runners to Team Camp at McCormick's Creek State Park and the team is looking quite good thus far in their initial quality runs. The team will dedicate this season in honor of Coach Bell's high school coach Tom Hathaway. Bell was a member of Hathway's third Boys State Championship team in 1975 at Southport High School. Hathaway passed away on April 22,,2012. Carmel will kickoff the 2012 cross country season and their road to a state title this Saturday at the Carmel Classic Distance Medley at Northview.
