EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana women's track and field senior All-American Mary Ballinger will have the chance to defend her national championship in the 3,000-meter steeplechase this season thanks to her strong performance in the event at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California, Thursday night.

Ballinger posted an NCAA II automatic qualifying time of 10 minutes, 34.23 seconds, less than 12 seconds off the school-record pace she posted in the finals at the 2009 NCAA II Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Ballinger was one of four Screaming Eagles to post a qualifying time Thursday night as sophomores Jackie Henderson and Adrienne Curtis joined junior Sarah Whiteman in notching provisional marks in the 10,000 meters.

Henderson's time of 35 minutes, 51.56 seconds was less than 22 ticks off an automatic qualifying time, while Whiteman and Curtis each had times that were at least 39 seconds faster than the provisional cutoff (37:20.00).

The Eagles also had a squad finish seventh out of 10 teams at the Rose-Hulman Twilight Meet in Terre Haute, Indiana, Friday. USI scored 51 points behind the performance of senior Christy Dixon, who was second in the 1,500 meters and third in the 800 meters.

The Eagles are scheduled to return to action April 23-24 when they compete at the Hillsdale “Gina” Relays in Hillsdale, Michigan, as well as the Bellarmine Invitational in Louisville, Kentucky.
