STANFORD, Calif.—University of Southern Indiana juniors
Dustin Emerick and
Jackie Henderson posted strong NCAA II provisional qualifying times Friday evening to open the 2011 outdoor track and field season at the Stanford University Invitational.
Emerick was second in his section of the men's 5,000 meters with a provisional time of 14 minutes, 11.55 seconds. Emerick's mark was just 11.55 seconds off the automatic qualifying standard and was less than two seconds off the winning time of 14 minutes, 9.67 seconds set by Northeastern's Erick Jenkins.
Henderson was 26th in her section of the women's 10,000 meters with a provisional qualifying time of 35 minutes, 33.38 seconds. Her pace was just 33.38 seconds shy of the automatic qualifying standard.
In all, 27 competitors ran in Emerick's section of the 5,000 meters and 40 runners competed in Henderson's section of the 10,000 meters.
The rest of the Screaming Eagles open the 2011 outdoor season Saturday when they compete at the Billy Smith Open in Vincennes, Indiana. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (CDT).
