Eagles finish 18th at Louisville Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The No. 7 University of Southern Indiana men's cross country team finished 18th out of 35 teams Saturday morning in the gold competition of the Greater Louisville Classic at the E.P. Tom Sawyer Park, site of the 2010 NCAA II Midwest Region and NCAA II National Championship meets.

USI finished with 488 points, six points behind the University of Missouri and 78 points ahead of the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and the University of Kentucky. Missouri finished 17th, while UT-Chattanooga and Kentucky tied for 19th.

Junior All-Americans Dustin Emerick and Brendan Devine led the Screaming Eagles. Emerick finished 77th in the 323 competitor field as he crossed the finish line with an 8k time of 24 minutes, 55.65 seconds. Devine was 87th with a time of 25 minutes, 1.96 seconds.

The University of Louisville finished with 97 points to capture the team title, while No. 3-ranked Colorado School of Mines and No. 4 Grand Valley State University finished second and third, respectively.

Columbus State University senior Meshack Koyiaki won the race with a time of 23 minutes, 20.75 seconds.

In addition to the gold competition, the Eagles were 16th out of 34 teams in the blue competition. USI, which finished with 434 points, was led by junior Derrick Thomas, who was 58th with an 8k time of 26 minutes, 12.80 seconds.

The Eagles return to action October 16 when they compete at the Fast Cats Classic in Owensboro, Kentucky.
