BOONE, N.C.—The No. 13 University of Southern Indiana women's cross country team had a strong start to its 2010 season as it finished second out of six teams at the Appalachian State University Mountaineer Open Friday evening.
USI finished with 57 points, 40 behind first-place Ohio State University and 18 ahead of third-place University of Alabama-Birmingham. The Screaming Eagles bested Division II foe and No. 24 Queens University (N.C.) by nearly 40 points.
The Eagles had four runners place in the top 14 and five in the top 20, with junior
Jackie Henderson pacing the squad with a fifth-place effort and freshman
Kaylee McClanahan finishing ninth.
Henderson finished the 5k course in 18 minutes, 40.80 seconds, less than a minute off the winning pace set by Ohio State's Ellen Birmingham. McClanahan finished the race in 18 minutes, 54.61 seconds.
Other top 20 runners for the Eagles included senior
Holly Bartelt, junior
Adrienne Curtis, and freshman
Erika Wilson. Bartelt and Curtis were 13th and 14th, respectively, while Wilson finished 20th.
The Eagles return to action October 2 when they compete in the Greater Louisville Classic at the E.P. Tom Sawyer Park, site of the NCAA II Midwest Region and NCAA II National Championship meets.
