Jordan punches ticket to nationals

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana freshman Michael Jordan punched his ticket to the NCAA II Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday night as he posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the University of Louisville Cardinal Twilight.

Jordan, who finished second in the event, just missed a school record with his time of nine minutes, 00.21 seconds. His time, which ranks him eighth nationally, was just 2.21 seconds shy of USI and GLVC Hall of Fame member Elly Rono '98.

In addition to Jordan, fellow classmate Michael Callison posted an NCAA II provisional qualifying time in the steeplechase at the Louisville Cardinal Classic. Callison was sixth in the event with a time of nine minutes, 12.93 seconds.

The Screaming Eagles also participated at the Dr. Keeler Invitational in Naperville, Illinois, Friday, where sophomores Andrew Dixon and Jackie Henderson posted NCAA II provisional qualifying times in men's and women's 10,000 meters, respectively. Dixon posted a time of 30 minutes, 45.18 seconds, while Henderson completed her race in 37 minutes, 00.82 seconds.

USI provisional qualifiers will have to await the final declarations for the NCAA II Championships, while Jordan and senior Mary Ballinger compete in the preliminaries of the men's and women's steeplechase at the NCAA II Championships May 27 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
