In His Own Words: Scott Milling

Hey everybody thanks again for checking out my blog.  First, I would like to thank guys like Billy Bund and Jack Keelan who complemented me at Palatine on my first blog. I appreciate all the support. This past week we had two meets so let’s just get right to that.

On Thursday we had our first and only home meet of the year against Downers Grove North (DGN) and Proviso West. Thanks to very hard efforts on Monday and Tuesday our team was filled with a myriad of different sores and pains, but everybody was really excited to get to run at home. For seniors, it was our last race on a course that we have run thousands of miles on throughout our York careers. The meet went really well as we won on all levels. On the varsity side, many runners had huge PRs and it was a great effort heading into Saturday.  It was very bittersweet running that cool down; thinking it only seemed like yesterday I was running in the York Frosh/Soph Invite. It's nuts how time just flies by. We left East End ready for a huge test at Palatine.

The Palatine Invite, in my opinion besides State and NXN, is the coolest meet I have gone to in my high school career. It really is the ultimate cross country meet: team tents filling the grass fields, a tricky and quirky course, super competitive races on all levels, and super long bathroom lines. Also, it is always a sight to see how many kids on other teams I’ll see running around with a York beanie cap on…some kids on our team have become quite the impressive salesmen. The day started off awesome for York, when John May won the freshman race with a very impressive performance.  Next was the sophomore race or what is now known on our team as the infamous “Plowman Gets His Face Messed Up Race.” Matt in the first 150 meters fell and when he was trying to get up took a spike to the face and before he knew it he only saw fans behind him and felt his nose just gushing blood.  He came away with second place with an extremely gutsy performance and a nice beauty scar for his Homecoming pictures that night.  Next was the varsity race and everybody was ready to go. Unfortunately, we didn’t pull out the victory and lost to a very very good St. Xavier team. Thankfully, this is not the State Meet and we still have six weeks to put everything together. Our top four can all improve and our fifth man just had a rough day, but I know that this loss will just make us stronger for the future.  After the varsity race, JV guys knew that there were spots on the table. Alex Baughman stepped up to the plate and won in a commanding performance.  Alex ran a great time and he will be right in the thick of things this next month.  We left Deer Grove East not with the result we wanted, but motivation for the rest of the year.

This week we have two meets: a tri meet against Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central and then the Peoria Central Invite.  See ya'll next week!
