BOONE, N.C.—The No. 7 University of Southern Indiana men's cross country team bested seven NCAA Division I programs, including Florida State University and Wake Forest University, Friday evening as it finished first out of 11 teams at the season-opening Covered Bridge Open.
USI dominated the race, placing three runners in the top 10 and five in the top 12, as it finished with 42 points, 17 better than second-place Florida State.
More impressively was the fact that USI's top two runners—senior All-Americans
Dustin Emerick and
Brendan Devine—were not among the Screaming Eagles' top four finishers. Emerick crossed the finish line in 12th place as USI's number five runner, while Devine will compete at the University of Evansville's Mid-America Opener Saturday.
The Eagles were led by junior
Michael Jordan and freshman
Tyler Pence. Jordan was third overall in the 111-competitor field with an 8k time 25 minutes, 42.20 seconds, while Pence finished sixth overall with a time of 25 minutes, 51.70 seconds.
Junior
Michael Callison finished 10th with a time of 26 minutes, 2.20 seconds, while senior
John Latta was 11th overall.
The Eagles will have a small squad compete at the UE Mid-America Opener Saturday at 10 a.m. at the UE Cross Country Course. They are expected to run a full squad at the Indiana Intercollegiate in Bloomington, Indiana, September 16.
