Emerick nets GLVC weekly honor

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana junior Dustin Emerick was named the Great Lakes Valley Men's Track Athlete of the Week following his record-setting performance at the Mt. SAC Relays last week.

This is the second time during the outdoor season and the fourth time during the 2011 indoor and outdoor seasons that Emerick has garnered GLVC Track Athlete of the Week accolades. He has earned the honor a total of seven times in his career and five times for outdoor track.

Emerick broke USI and GLVC Hall of Fame member Elly Rono's school record in the 10,000 meters last Thursday when he finished fifth in the Elite Invitational race with an NCAA II automatic qualifying time of 28 minutes, 41.62 seconds. His time, which is the ninth-fastest in Division II history, ranks first in the nation and 13th in the world.

A two-time All-American in cross country, Emerick also ranks sixth in the nation in the 5,000 meters. His performance last Thursday ensured his third consecutive trip to the NCAA II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 10,000 meters.

Emerick is a history major and a graduate of Elmwood High School.

The Screaming Eagles return to action Saturday when they compete at the Pacesetter Invitational in Terre Haute, Indiana, and the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee.
