WALNUT, Calif.—University of Southern Indiana men's track and field junior Dustin Emerick broke USI and GLVC Hall of Fame member Elly Rono's school record in the 10,000 meters Thursday night at the Mt. SAC Relays.

Emerick was fifth in the Elite Invitational race with an NCAA Division II automatic qualifying time of 28 minutes, 41.62 seconds, less than four ticks off the winning pace of 28 minutes, 38.34 seconds set by the University of Portland's Alfred Kipchumba.

Emerick's time, which is the fastest by a Division II competitor this season, ranks ninth all-time in NCAA Division II history and is the fastest since California State University-Chico's Scott Baughs set the all-time mark of 27 minutes, 48.06 seconds in May of 2008.

In addition to the 10,000 meters, Emerick also ranks third in the nation in the 5,000 meters after running the event in 14 minutes, 11.55 seconds at the Stanford Invitational earlier this season.

The Screaming Eagles also got a strong performance from sophomore Michael Callison, who posted a provisional qualifying time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Callison was 20th in the Olympic Development race with a time of nine minutes, 12.18 seconds.

USI returns to action Saturday when it competes at the Bellarmine University Invitational in Louisville, Kentucky.
