The story of Indiana's outdoor leaderboards so far is fairly simple: the athletes who won state titles last June are back, and they are better than they were last year.
Noah Bontrager (Westview, 2026) won the IHSAA state title in the 1600m last June in 4:02.60. He has already run 4:00.87 (as a split registered in a mile race), a PR, at the Distance Showcase on Apr 17 - first in Indiana, fourth nationally. The 3200m tells the same story. His 8:41.28 at the Carmel HS Distance Showcase on Apr 24 is a PR over the 8:51.22 he ran to win state last year, and ranks first in Indiana and sixth in the country. His aforementioned mile of 4:02.48 leads the state and ranks third nationally.
Rylan Hainje (Franklin Central, 2026) swept the 110H and 300H at last year's state meet and has not lost in either event this spring. His 13.29 in the 110H at the Kenny Randle Invite on Apr 25 leads Indiana at fifth nationally. The 300H is where he has pushed furthest past his old ceiling: 35.64 at the Franklin Central dual on Apr 21 is a PR over the 35.82 he ran to win state, third in the country.
Demarco Easter (Merrillville, 2026) cleared 16-9 in the pole vault at the West Lafayette Relays on Apr 25, a PR over his state champion mark of 16-3, which now sits 13th nationally.
Kaleb Rasheed (Avon, 2026) is the reigning state discus champion and has already thrown 201-1 at the Hendricks County Championships on Apr 28, a PR over his title mark of 191-10- he leads Indiana and sits in 12th nationally.
Jordan Randall (Warsaw, 2026) leads the state in the high jump at 7-1 from the Classic at Mishawaka on Apr 17, sits sixth nationally, and looks poised to defend his IHSAA title.
Weston Ott (Churubusco, 2026) put 66-7 in the shot at the Churubusco Throwers Showcase on May 2 to lead Indiana, and rank ninth nationally.
Camran Mitchell (Charlestown, 2026) ran 47.03 at the Eastern Relays on Apr 17-18, a PR over his previous outdoor best of 47.98 in the 400m, which leads the state.
And Zach Gantz (Bishop Chatard, 2026) leads Indiana in the 800m at 1:52.35 from the Dennis McNulty Invitational on Apr 24
On the girls side, the pattern of returners leveling up holds. Mallory Weller (FW Concordia Lutheran, 2026) won the IHSAA 1600m and 3200m titles last June and leads both events outdoors. Her 3200m of 9:59.68 at the Carmel HS Distance Showcase on Apr 24 is a PR over her previous outdoor best of 10:17.32, and ranks 10th nationally. Her 1600m of 4:41.09 from the Distance Showcase on Apr 17 ranks 11th nationally.
Ellie Barada (Bloomington South, 2026), the reigning IHSAA 800m state champion, leads Indiana in both the 400m and 800m. She ran 54.68 in the 400m at the Conference Indiana Championship on May 1, a PR over her previous outdoor best of 55.41. Her 800m lead of 2:07.58 from the Mustang Invitational on Apr 25 ranks 17th nationally.
The underclassmen have been busy too. Jada Harper (New Albany, 2028) ran 13.67 in the 100mH at the Eastern Relays on Apr 17-18, a PR over her outdoor best of 13.97, leading Indiana and slotting in at 24th nationally.
ZaNariae White (Terre Haute South, 2028) took the long jump state lead with 19-11, a PR over her previous outdoor best of 19-2.5.
Chloe Senefeld (Hamilton Southeastern, 2026) ran 42.32 in the 300H on Apr 28, a PR over her previous state meet mark of 42.62, which leads Indiana.
Maddison Judge (Franklin Community, 2028) leads the state in the discus at 158-2 from Apr 29, and ranks 16th nationally.
Amelia Smith (Guerin Catholic, 2027) cleared 12-9 at the Circle City Conference Championship on May 1, an outdoor PR over her previous best of 12-6 - she leads Indiana in the pole vault.
