Aces Ready For MVC XC Championships

10/27/2010 2:57:00 PM

The University of Evansville cross country teams will travel to Augusta, Kansas on Saturday to take part in the 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Championships, hosted by Wichita State.  The championships will be held at RAFT Golf Course with the women's 5-K race starting at 10:30 a.m. followed by the men's 8-K at 11:30 a.m.

On the men's side, Evansville will try to build on a third place finish two weeks ago at the UE Invitational.  The men tied for seventh at last year's MVC Championships, and look to senior Ryan Witters to lead the team this weekend.  Witters finished eighth at the UE Invite, setting a new personal 8-K record at 25:13.73.  He has set the pace for the men in all six races this season, with five top 15 finishes.

UE's women are coming off a first place finish at the UE Invitational, where the Aces had five runners in the top 13.  Sophomore Lauren Zeabart has been the pace setter for the women in all six races this fall.  Zeabart finished fourth with a personal best time of 18:37.41 at the UE Invite.  Freshman Kelby Jenkins hasn't been far behind Zeabart all season.  Jenkins finished just six seconds behind Zeabart at the UE Invite to finish fifth with a time of 18:43.69, a new personal best.  Zeabart (5) and Jenkins (4) have combined for nine top 15 finishes this season.

"We've had a good two weeks of practice and both teams are ready for Saturday," said UE head coach Don Walters.  "We had a good performance at our last meet, but we'll be up against great competition from everyone in the conference.  The men are bringing in five seniors with a lot of
experience, but the women will be primarily freshmen and sophomores.  They just have to get the jitters out early and run like it's just another race. I'm confident that if we go out and focus on placing, and run well, the times will be there and so will our teams."

Following the State Farm MVC Championships, UE will have just one meet remaining on its 2010 cross country calendar.  That comes on Saturday, November 13 when UE travels to Rochester, Michigan to take part in the 2010 NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships.
