The University of Evansville women’s cross country team took home the first place team trophy on Saturday at the ninth-annual UE Invitational.  The women had their top five runners all in the top 13 with Lauren Zeabart leading the way.  The men’s team took third place overall with senior Ryan Witters again setting the pace.

Sophomore Zeabart finished fourth overall in a time of 18:37.58.  Freshman Kelby Jenkins was right on her heels coming in fifth with a time of 18:43.69.  Sophomore Shelby Cron ran third for UE finishing 11th overall with a time of 18:57.67 followed by senior Melissa Truex in 12th with a time of 18:58.04.  Junior Lauren Schaftlein rounded out UE’s top with a time of 19:03.89.  Freshman Nicole Kreuzman finished 30th with a time of 19:41.89 and Senior Jaclyn Dippel came in 35th overall in 19:53.15 to complete the Evansville’s scoring efforts.

For the men, Witters finished eighth overall in a time of 25:13.73 followed by senior Max Cordier in 11th with a time of 25:45.45.  Senior Chris Kipchirchir took third for UE finishing 18th overall with a time of 26:00.00, he was followed by junior Bryan Denny in the 19th with a time of 26:18.13.  Sophomore Samuel Mires came in 35th overall in a time of 26:27.58 followed by freshman Andrew Barrett in 40th with a time of 26:33.60.  Senior Nick Tyree finished 58th overall in a time of 27:09.14 to round out the scoring for the men.

“It was a great day for a race, and our team impressed me,” said UE head coach Don Walters.  “The conditions were perfect for fast competitive race.  The women all put up great times and took first place.  I’m really happy how we look going into the conference championships.  If we put up a race like this, we’re going to surprise some people.”

The Aces will be back on the course on October 30th at the State Farm Missouri Valley Championships in Wichita, Kansas.
