Women's runners finish 19th at Louisville Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The No. 11 University of Southern Indiana women's cross country team finished 19th out of 35 teams Saturday morning in the gold competition of the Greater Louisville Classic at the E.P. Tom Sawyer Park, site of the 2010 NCAA II Midwest Region and NCAA II National Championship meets.

USI finished with 548 points, eight points behind Washington University (Missouri) and 23 points ahead of The University of Mississippi. Washington was 18th, while Ole Miss finished 20th.

Freshman Kaylee McClanahan and junior Jackie Henderson led the Screaming Eagles. McClanahan was 85th in the 302-competitor field with a 5k time of 18:26.84. Henderson was 113th with a time of 18:36.54.

No. 2 Grand Valley State University edged out Vanderbilt University by a point for the team title, while Shippensburg University junior Neely Spence captured the individual title with a time of 16 minutes, 32.90 seconds.

In addition to the gold competition, the Eagles were 32nd out of 34 teams in the blue competition. Sophomore Brittany Karges paced the Eagles, who finished with 776 points, with a 112th-place finish and a 5k time of 20 minutes, 9.80 seconds.

The Eagles return to action October 16 when they compete at the Fast Cats Classic in Owensboro, Kentucky.
