OXFORD, Ohio -- Ryan Witters finished third in a field of 51 runners Saturday to lead the University of Evansville men's cross country team at the 8K Miami Invitational.

Witters led the race until after the 6K mark, when a pack of five runners passed him. He fell back 50 meters, but began to pick up the pace with 600 meters to go. Witters caught the leaders and took over first place before finally relinquishing the lead in the final 50 meters.  His time of 25:40 was just two seconds behind champion Jarrod Eick of Miami.  Michael Perry of Miami was second in 25:39.  Cody Stein came in second for the Aces and 16th overall in 26:46, followed by three more Evansville runners in freshman Andrew Barrett (27:06), Max Cordier (27:10) and Nicholas Tyree (27:19). Samuel Mires had a personal record of 27:34 for 25th and Brady Hall celebrated his birthday with a personal record of 28:04.The host Redhawks, who are regionally ranked, easily won their own race with 18 points.  Evansville was third behind Cedarville in the four-team event with 73 points.

The Aces compete again Friday at the Indiana Intercollegiate Championships, hosted by Purdue University.
