EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Evansville women’s cross country team finished second while the men finished third overall at the Mid-America Opener on Saturday at the UE Cross Country Course.
Evansville women placed five runners in the top 15 of the 4K race to finish behind first place Louisville and edge out Missouri Valley Conference rival Indiana State. Louisville runner Kim Grieshaber finished in first place with a time of 14:20.18. Sophomore Lauren Zeabart led the Aces with her fifth place finish and a time of 15:12.17 followed by sixth place finisher Kelby Jenkins with a time of 15:25.81. Sophomore Shelby Cron (10th- 15:49.17) and juniors Lauren Shaftlein (11th- 15:50.69) and Melissa Truex (15th- 15:57.40) finished in the top 15.
The Evansville men were led by senior Ryan Witters with a fifth place finish and a time of 17:48.26 in the 6K race. The Aces finished third behind regionally ranked Indiana State and Louisville. Indiana State’s Al Escalera finished in first place with a time of 17:23.34. Sophomore Cody Stein (16th – 18:52.97), freshman Andrew Barrett (18th – 19:06.92), senior Max Cordier (19th – 19:08.70), and sophomore Samuel Mires (20th - 19:10.18) were all in the scoring pack for the Evansville men.
“Overall, I’m pretty pleased with both the men and women’s showings today,” said UE head coach Don Walters. “Both team MVPs from last year (Lauren Zeabart and Ryan Witters) came out and took charge of the race. This is a good starting point for us; now we need to build on it in the weeks ahead.”
The Purple Aces will return to the cross country course next Saturday at 8 am central time at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio.
