HILLSDALE, Mich. - The IUPUI runners capped the spring portion of their 2010 schedule on Friday night as four runners took part in the Hillsdale College Gina Relays on the Joe Merrick Track. Head Coach
Joni Sanders had two entries in the 5,000 meter run and two others in the 10,000 meter run.
In the 5K, freshman
Rachel Zajac finished 44th of 84 runners in a time of 18:48.30 and senior
Jennie Jamicich capped her career with an 18:50.44, finishing 45th. It was Jamicich's first-ever sub-19 minute track 5K. The Munster-native entered her final lap at approximately 17:30, but turned on the burners in her last lap to register a personal record time.
"It was a great night," IUPUI Head Coach
Joni Sanders said. "Jennie had a big PR by about 10 seconds. What a great way for her to end a great career at IUPUI.
"I know we were all really excited for her."
In the 10K, junior
Brittney McDuffee wheeled her way to a 37:43.02 to take 14th of 42 runners and rookie
Rebecca Downs placed 35th in a time of 40:32.16.
"Brittney ran an incredible 10K," Sanders said. "We've been gearing for this race all spring. She had a great game plan and stuck to it. The plan was to go out a little slower and come down as the race went on.
"She looked awesome the last two miles. It was definitely the best track race I've seen her run."
For Downs, the longer distance played a toll, but the freshman gutted out her first collegiate 10K.
"Rebecca struggled a little bit in the middle, but finished out strong," Sanders said. "It was a great first 10K for her - definitely a very respectable time."
With Jamicich and
Michelle Williams being the only seniors on the roster, the focus will now shift to the 2010 cross country schedule, set to open in September.
