INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's cross country team was awarded its first-ever Jag Cup title on Thursday afternoon in conjunction with National Student-Athlete Day. The men's cross country team outdistanced the second place women's soccer team as the Jag Cup was awarded for the sixth year.
The men's soccer, which won the first four Jag Cup crowns, placed third.
The Jag Cup competition is used to gauge student-athlete involvement off the playing fields as points are awarded based on academic honors, community outreach, attendance to IUPUI athletic events, SAAC communication and personal/team enhancement.
IUPUI Associate AD John Rasmussen awarded the trophy to Head Coach
Chuck Koeppen's team. In addition, the Jag Spirit Awards were given out to the student-athletes that earned the most individual Jag Cup points. Men's soccer junior
Derek Craig and women's swimming senior
Emily Valencia earned those honors.
It was also announced that
Joe Hoffman will serve as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President next year and Craig will serve as Vice President.
As part of National Student-Athlete Day, all IUPUI student-athletes in attendance were treated to a meal prior to IUPUI's softball doubleheader with Dayton, courtesy of the IUPUI Office of Alumni Relations and John and Patty Raker.
Nearly 100 student-athletes representing all 14 varsity teams attended the event.
