OXFORD, Ohio - Both freshman
Rachel Zajac and junior
Brittney McDuffee finished among the top 15 as five IUPUI runners took part in the 5,000 meter race at the Miami Invitational on the George Rider Track on Saturday afternoon.
Zajac was 13th of 45 runners in a time of 18:24.43 while McDuffee was 15th at 18:32.67.
"Rachel and Brittney ran really solid races," Head Coach
Joni Sanders said. "It was great experience for both of them. It was a good wayfor them to see how track races unfold. It went out a little slower than they both expected, but they both responded well."
IUPUI's three other entries came in the slower of the two heats as senior
Jennie Jamicich turned in a time of 19:22.88 and
Rebecca Downs spun a time of 19:34.26.
"Jennie and Becca ran close together most of the race," Sanders said. "Jennie passed her in the last couple of laps, but Becca hung in there with her."
Senior
Michelle Williams capped IUPUI's quintet in a time of 20:05.25.
"Michelle ran much better than she did at Purdue, which we were hoping she'd do," Sanders said. "With her clinical schedule the way it is, this was actually her last college race.
"We certainly appreciate her contributions to our program. She's a fabulous person and a real hard worker and someone our younger runners have looked up to."
The IUPUI women's team will conclude the spring season on Apr. 24 when they take part in the Hillsdale College Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Mich..
