Ballinger posts provisional mark in outdoor-opener

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Senior All-American Mary Ballinger finished first in the 5,000 meters Friday evening with an NCAA II provisional qualifying time of 17 minutes, 23.88 seconds to lead the University of Southern Indiana women's track and field team to a 10th-place finish in its outdoor season-opener at the Washington University Invitational.

Ballinger was one of seven Screaming Eagles to post a top-10 finish as USI racked up 38 points in the 17-team field.

Senior Christy Dixon and junior Allison Laird aided the Eagles with top-five finishes. Dixon was second in the 1,500 meters, while Laird was third in the 10,000 meters.

Sophomore Jackie Henderson was fourth in the 5,000 meters, while sophomore Brittany Karges and freshman Rebekah Hoffman each posted fifth-place finishes in the 10,000 meters and heptathlon, respectively.

USI returns to action April 16-17 when it sends a small squad to the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California. The Eagles also are scheduled to compete at the Rose-Hulman Twilight in Terre Haute, Indiana, on April 16.
