SIX JAGUARS RECOGNIZED AMONG IUPUI'S TOP 100

Five current and one former student-athlete chosen among 11th annual top 100

INDIANAPOLIS – Five current and one former IUPUI student-athlete were recently named among the 11th Annual IUPUI "Top 100" Student Recognition Awards, announced by The IUPUI Alumni Council and the Student Organization for Alumni Relations (SOAR). The honorees were selected by a panel of faculty, students and alumni and were judged by civic and collegiate activities, professional achievements, scholastic achievement, honor awards and memberships, as well as letters of recommendation.

The six were Mia Ettl (softball), Evan Fruits (men’s cross country), Joe Hoffman (men’s cross country), Katrina McCrory (women’s soccer), Emily Valencia (women’s swimming) and Victoria Wheeler (women’s swimming. For Fruits, McCrory and Wheeler, it was their second consecutive year being honored.

The top 100 will be recognized during the 2010 IUPUI Outstanding Student Recognition Dinner on Friday, Apr. 9 at the Indianapolis Marriott. The reception will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the dinner at 7. Hon. Richard A. Reed, Special Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Senior Director for Resilience Policy, will be the keynote speaker. Reed has earned three degrees on the IUPUI campus.


Ettl, a senior who was selected as an Academic All-Region nominee in 2009, has also been on IUPUI’s Academic Advisor’s List seven times. She has also been on the Summit League Commissioner’s List for Academic Excellence twice, while being named Academic All-Summit League three times.


Fruits, who earned the team’s Coach’s Award and Leadership Award in his final season, is a four-year letter winner and a four-time Academic All-Summit League selection. He has been on IUPUI’s Academic Advisor’s List all seven semesters of his academic career and is majoring in Finance in the Kelley School of Business.


Hoffman, who was named team MVP last season and most improved for the second consecutive season, is a five-time representative for IUPUI’s Academic Advisor’s List. He is a three-time Academic All-Summit League selection while being named to the Summit League Commissioner’s List for Academic Excellence in 2008. The junior also earned First Team All-Summit League honors this past fall.


McCrory, a senior in the Kelley School of Business, continued to earn an assortment of academic and athletic honors this past season, being named the recipient of the Michael A. Carroll Scholarship for the 2009-10 academic year. She is IUPUI’s first-ever two-time First Team All-Summit League selection and was also featured among the nation's top 30 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. The senior has been on IUPUI’s Academic Advisor’s List seven times while being named Academic All-Summit League all four years of her career as a student-athlete.


Valencia, a six-time representative of IUPUI’s Academic Advisor’s List, has also been named Academic All-Summit League three times. The senior has been recognized on the Summit League Commissioner’s List for Academic Excellence two times.


Wheeler, who graduated with a degree in nursing, was active with the IUPUI SAAC and is a four-time Academic All-League pick. She was on the IUPUI Academic Advisor’s List all eight semesters of her college career and consistently on the Summit League Commissioner’s List for Academic Excellence.


To be nominated, students must be a junior or senior and have a cumulative 3.0 grade point average. They must have also completed a minimum of 56 credit hours with at least 25 hours at IUPUI.
