Kick of The Week: Flashes Mile Produces Top Indiana Times

This week's Kick of The Week comes to us from Indianapolis, Indiana, and the Flashes Showcase Miracle Mile.

On Friday night under the lights, some of the midwest's best distance runners took to the track at Franklin Central High School to compete in the boys mile. The race was ultimately decided by just .25 hundredths of a second.

A pack of four guys led the field through 1200m in 3:08. With 300m to go the pack had dropped to three as the anticipation started building for the final stretch.

In the final 250 meters Highland High School's (IN) Lucas Guerra put in a surge from second place to pass St. Xavier's (OH) Nathan MountainColumbus North High School's (IN) Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff would also make the pass as well.

With 200 to go, it was down to Guerra and Kilbarger-Stumpff running practically neck in neck down the home stretch. Guerra would hold on to win with Kilbarger-Stumpff not far behind him. The two ran 4:09.13 and 4:09.38 respectively with Mountain taking third in 4:11.76. Guerra and Kilbarger-Stumpff were both under the previous meet record time of 4:11.31 held by former Hamilton Southeastern High School runner (IN) Gabe Fendel.

Guerra and Kilbarger-Stumpff now rank eighth and ninth all-time in the state of Indiana. The meet produced seven of the top 50 Indian all-time boys mile marks. Nationally for the 2021 season, Guerra's and Kilbarger-Stumpff's times rank sixth and eighth respectively.
