Distance Talent Ty Garrett is Headed to Valor Christian

Late Friday evening news broke that rising sophomore Ty Garrett will be moving from Indiana to Colorado. The 9:08 3200m runner will be attending Valor Christian High School in Highlands Ranch, CO. Valor is the same high school where 3x CO state cross country champion, Cole Sprout and girls heptathlon national record holder Anna Hall graduated from.

Garrett will join a team that placed 11th in the class 5A division in 2019. He will be a strong addition to the team this season, pending the adjustments he'll have to make to racing at altitude now.

Ty Garrett completed his freshman year at Center Grove High School, where he wasted no time making a name for himself. He took home 22nd at the IHSAA XC State Championship in 2019, and followed that up with a 3rd place finish in the boys frosh/soph race at the team regional meet at Lavern Gibson. He had a short but stellar track season, running 4:22 for 1600 and 9:08 for 3200 at the Desert Dream Last Hurrah Invitational. That 9:08.87 performance broke the state freshman record of 9:11.97 held by North Central's Futsum Zeinasellassie.

2019 Colorado State Cross Country Champs Coverage

The loss of Ty Garrett to the CG Trojans will be a big hit for them, as he looked to be their strongest frontrunner. Solely based on 2019 PR's, they were projected 14th in the state and likely would've been able to exceed those projections and been a top 5 podium team this year.

We spoke with Garrett to learn more on the decision.

"This decision was actually pretty last minute and was because of different reasons (dad's business, school, etc...) but I'll be attending and competing at Valor Christian High school."

We then asked Garrett some goals he has while competing at Valor HS.

"I would say one of the goals that I have in Colorado is to just compete as I would here in Indiana. Colorado's a big running state full of competition which should help me improve through the season. I've never ran in altitude for more than three weeks so I don't know how that will effect me during training and competition."
