Leo Daschbach, the fastest rising track and field distance recruit in the Class of 2020, made his collegiate pledge on Thursday, committing to the University of Washington after an incredible few weeks that saw him earn the second-best 5K effort in high school cross country history.
The Highland (AZ) High School senior, currently ranked No. 2 on the MileSplit50 this fall and No. 39 in MileSplit's top 50 Class of 2020 recruits, chose the Huskies over Oregon, Colorado and UCLA.
With the commitment, Washington, led by head coaches Andy and Maurica Powell, earned a big coup, receiving an athlete who has the kind of range that can go anywhere from 800 meters all the way to 10,000.
Daschbach, a 5-time state champion in Arizona, owns personal bests of 50.27 in the 400m, 1:51.99 in the 800m, 3:49.43 in the 1,500m and 4:03.98 in the full mile and 8:51.09 in the 3,200m.
He won the Desert Twilight Festival 5K in a US No. 2 all-time performance of 14:14.26, and was second at Clovis in 14:30.90.
The addition of Daschbach will continue strong early recruitment from the Powell's, who signed Loudoun Valley (VA) graduate Samuel Affolder, Mount Si's (WA) Joe Waskom and Camas' (WA) grad Daniel Maton over last year's recruiting class.
