IHSAA 2018 Cross Country Regionals Previews

REGIONAL #13 - BROWN COUNTY

FEEDER SECTIONALS: BROWN COUNTY AND SOUTHWESTERN (HANOVER)

BOYS PREVIEW

Boys Teams that Advanced: Columbus North, Jennings County, Austin, Silver Creek, White River Valley, Martinsville, Seymour, Southwestern (Hanover), Brown County, and Henryville

Boys Individual Race: John Sluys has not only the best time on the season but also was able to win the Brown County Sectional last week and has the fastest time of the two feeder sectionals. Based on times the Southwestern Sectional appeared to run slower, and inccstats seamingly agrees as well, which should give make things interesting between the individuals from Columbus North and Jennings County

Boys Projected Top 5 Based on Season Bests:

1st - John Sluys (12) - 16:04 (Columbus North)

2nd - Carter Leak (11) - 16:14 (Jennings County)

3rd - Sam Horak (12) - 16:18 (Columbus North)

4th - Alex Hendrix (12) - 16:28 (Jennings County)

5th - Ethan Fugate (12) - 16:29 (Austin)

Boys Team Race: Columbus North and Jennings County both won their Sectional Championships last week at Brown County and Southwestern respectively.  These two programs both would like a Regional Championship under their belt as they look to most likely advance to the state meet once again this year.  Jennings County has a guy matched up to one from Columbus North all the way up to their fourth and fifth guys. The best chance for Jennings County to pull off an upset would be to have these runners perform better than Columbus North's fourth and fifth guys with the rest of their team pulling their weight as well.  Austin is a small school that should comfortably make it out of the Regional meet but will be faced with large complications at the Brown County semi-state. The last two spots will be very interesting especially for 5th as hypothetically 5th place White River Valley, 6th place Martinsville, and 7th place Seymour are only separated by two points.  There could be 6 schools battling for the final 2 spots in this unpredictable and exciting team race.

Boys Projected Advancing Teams Based on Hypothetical Meet*

1st - Columbus North - 31 points

2nd - Jennings County - 39 points

3rd - Austin - 102 points

4th - Silver Creek - 148 points

5th - White River Valley - 171 points

*If everyone ran their season best times at the Regional

GIRLS PREVIEW

Girls Teams that Advanced: Columbus North, Jennings County, Seymour, Columbus East, Silver Creek, Madison Consolidated, Brownstown Central, Martinsville, Switzerland County, Crothersville

Girls Individual Race: Olivia Morlock easily won her Sectional by a large margin of over 30 seconds and also has the best time over the whole season for the Regional.  The Brown County Sectional looks like it had more individual talent for the girls as the Southwestern winner was Kaylyn Holman with a season best time of 20:08.  Any one of Olivia's teammates could provide a challenge to Seymour's Ashton Chase for the runner up position which should provide an intriguing team race for Columbus North.

Girls Projected Top 5 Based on Season Bests:

1st - Olivia Morlock (11) - 18:52 (Columbus North)

2nd - Ashton Chase (12) - 19:26 (Seymour)

3rd - Mackenzie Barnett (10) - 19:27 (Columbus North)

4th - Emma Morrison (11) - 19:37 (Jennings County)

5th - Aric Tong (10) - 19:47 (Columbus North)

Girls Team Race: The Columbus North girls nearly were able to achieve a perfect score at the Brown County Sectional even while resting some of their top 7 runners.  They most likely will not be challenged much more than they were at the Sectional meet last week. This team has great aspiration for state and don't be surprised if they are able to get a perfect score if they elect to run their top athletes.  Jennings County, Seymour, and Columbus East should all be fairly close in competition and advance to the semi-state where they will likely see their season end. Silver Creek has a decent advantage over the other bottom 5 schools competing and should also advance if they run well.

Girls Projected Advancing Teams Based on Hypothetical Meet*

1st - Columbus North - 26 points

2nd - Jennings County - 73 points

3rd - Seymour - 91 points

4th - Columbus East - 108 points

5th - Silver Creek - 145 points

REGIONAL #14 - BEDFORD NORTH LAWRENCE

FEEDER SECTIONALS: BEDFORD NORTH LAWRENCE AND TERRE HAUTE NORTH VIGO

BOYS PREVIEW

Boys Teams that Advanced: Bloomington South, Bloomington North, Northview, Terre Haute North, Terre Haute South, Edgewood, West Vigo, Eastern Greene, Bloomfield, and Sullivan

Boys Individual Race: Last week Paul Rushton unexpectedly came down the final stretch in the lead and held off Austin Haskett for a large upset in the Bedford North Lawrence Sectional.  Things will be especially heated up this week throwing Cael Light into the mix. Light easily won the Sectional, and with tensions between Bloomington South and Bloomington North runners after last week's results and a hungry Austin Haskett, this could be one of the best individual races in the state for many to get back on track and fight for the Regional title.

Boys Projected Top 5 Based on Season Bests:

1st - Austin Haskett (12) - 15:33 (Edgewood)

2nd - Ian Shaw (12) - 15:36 (Bloomington South)

3rd - Isaiah Hollars (12) - 15:50 (Bloomington North)

4th - Jack Gillard (11) - 15:51 (Bloomington South)

5th - Paul Rushton (11) - 15:52 (Bloomington North)

Boys Team Race: The team race should be a rematch of last week between Bloomington North and Bloomington South. North came out on top last week upsetting South putting South's State Title or even podium chance in question. Both teams ran at full strength and this week should be another chance to show what both teams are capable of running. Northview, Terre Haute North, and Terre Haute South are all projected to advance but could very easily be knocked out with sub par performances.

Boys Projected Advancing Teams Based on Hypothetical Meet*

1st - Bloomington South - 31 points

2nd - Bloomington North - 58 points

3rd - Northview - 116 points

4th - Terre Haute North Vigo - 121 points

5th - Terre Haute South Vigo - 150 points

GIRLS PREVIEW

Girls Teams that Advanced: Bloomington North, Bloomington South, Edgewood, Terre Haute South, Shakamak, Terre Haute North, Northview, Bedford North Lawrence, Eastern Greene, and Owen Valley

Girls Individual Race: Annalyssa Crain will likely run away from the competition early as she won by over 80 seconds last week at the Bedford North Lawrence Sectional.  Coming in 6th at the state meet last year, she should easily win this week and possibly next week at the Brown County semi-state. The rest of the top runners look to be mostly from the Bedford North Lawrence Sectional and are fairly spread apart both by season bests and last week's results.

Girls Projected Top 5 Based on Season Bests:

1st - Annalyssa Crain (10) - 17:48 (Edgewood)

2nd - Mya Hagerty (11) - 18:16 (Bloomington North)

3rd - Abby Beathea (9) - 18:30 (Bloomington South)

4th - Abbey Armstrong (11) - 19:25 (Bloomington North)

5th - Lily Barton (11) - 19:26 (Terre Haute South)

Girls Team Race: Much like the boys race the team race appears to be a close one between Bloomington North and Bloomington South.  At the Bedford North Lawrence Sectional North was able to hold off South by 11 points. The Edgewood girls made themselves known as well in that Sectional as they were only 9 points behind Bloomington South.  Terre Haute South was able to win their Sectional by a large margin and should be in the top 4 mix for the Regional title. It should also be noted that the Terre Haute North Girls were only one point behind Shakamak and any one of the bottom 6 schools could snag the final advancing position.

Girls Projected Advancing Teams Based on Hypothetical Meet*

1st - Bloomington North - 40 points

2nd - Bloomington South - 49 points

3rd - Edgewood - 91 points

4th - Terre Haute South - 101 points

5th - Shakamak - 174 points
